[School] Hanyang International Summer School (HISS) 2015- Accomodation

Hello readers!

Back with a post, finally! Back with a review on my 2015 Summer Exchange experience. I had a blast during my summer break in 2015, and had no regrets going for the Hanyang Summer Programme. The friends, the activities, the food, the shopping!! One word, SHIOK!!! Gonna focus on accommodation for this post, so watch out for more posts regarding other activities/queries about HISS 2015! On a side note, please do note that I am NOT sponsored to write any of my blogpost. I am just a typical blogger that wants to share my experience to all, to help those that need more info/ help.

If there's anyone from the local universities (NUS/SMU/NTU/SIM, etc) intending to head for summer school in the near future, I would definitely recommend Hanyang International Summer School (HISS). Looking for a cheap destination for Summer exchange? Checked. Looking for a location filled with loads of fun activities? Checked. Looking forward to loads of shopping and food hunting? Checked. Looking for free fieldtrips? Checked. Looking for fun profs? Checked! The list goes on and on, and really, you wouldn't regret it (EVEN IF YOU ARE INTENDING TO GO ALONE, like I did!)

I spent around SGD2.8K on accommodation and programme fees for the 1 month exchange. Roughly 800SGD on housing, which I chose off-campus dormitory and it turned out pretty well (especially the location!!!)I got Roseville in the end, out of all the other off campus dorm, which includes Hyosung, Sunny House, Vision and some other names I forgot, but there were a few others.

Amongst all the other off-campus dorm, I think mine was in the most strategic location. Thank you Lady Luck!(: The allocation was completely random so it depends on where you were allocated to. Roseville was a 15-20minutes walk to school, it is right beside the main gate of Hanyang University. However, by entering from the main entrance means that you will have to conquer the 65 degrees slope upwards every morning (which was the most tough thing I encountered in Korea for that one month). Although, halfway through the programme, my roommate shared with me a route via entry from the backgate which was significantly less steep- and yummy Kimbap en route to school! (Thankful to nice friends made there!)

Roseville was such a great place to live in, there is a busstop right in front of the dorm, a GS25 right at the lobby of my dorm, 2 minutes away from University shopping at Wangsimni station, 30seconds walk to Paris Baguette for fresh bakes, free wifi on the streets and even if you're worried about safety, the police station is right opposite the dorm!!!!

To be honest, I wanted on-campus housing so badly because it was so much cheaper, but they said there wasn't any more availability (which was a lie... the admin were just a lil lazy to do extra processing since I was allocated off-campus dorm already) If you are looking for a cheaper alternative, go for on-campus dorm. I heard from my friends that the female on-campus dorms have private bathrooms, which isn't what they indicated on the webpage, but its a good thing right!! Also, so near to school cos you can wake up late!! However, the downside is that they don't have free in-room washing machine (which I had in Roseville), no fridge for you to store your Banana milk (which I also had and managed to store Banana and yogurt milk for Breakfast in Roseville) and that they have curfew (so if you intend to go clubbing then you'll be locked out of your dorm...)

Off-campus housing is the most expensive shared room option. However, again, based on luck, it depends on which housing you get allocated to. There were 3 different housing for off-campus housing for HISS 2015: Golden Forest, Golden Forest City and Konkuk University Dorm. The best one would be GF, not the one with the 'City' word cos they are very different!! GF, as mentioned by my friend, was like a hotel. They had complimentary bottled water everyday, a housekeeper to pack their beds, it was just luxurious. However, it was quite a distance away from school which means you had to wake up earlier for school since those that stayed there had to take a subway 2-4 stations to Hanyang University station.

Any issues on dorms, do pm me, i'll try to answer! Also, do comment if you have any particular worries/ query about the programme that you wish for me to address in my next blog post!

Till then, cheers!

  1. Hi!! May I know what mods did you take there? (:

  2. Hey Kimberly, I did Health Equity, Money and Banking and Introduction to Sociology. I heard the modules are a little different from HISS 2015 so do check their page out to find out more (syllabus included). I will write a post on the modules I have taken soon!(: Till then, feel free to ask me more about the programme(:

    1. Okay thank you so so much!! I've been facing lots of trouble thinking of which mods to take there!

    2. Don't worry, just check out their whole list of modules. They usually provide more modules than other South Korean Uni does(:

  3. Hi there! :D I have applied for Hanyang summer school and is facing some problems with the accomodation now :( Both on campus and off campus dorm are full and i think im left with the off campus housing. Do you have more information about it and who can I ask? What about the address cause I will like to know how far is it from the subway station etc.

    Many thanks (:

    1. That is not unexpected. The programme is extremely popular and those people that got the on campus and off campus dorms have probably applied last month or so? I deleted all the info on the dorms already so I can only remember by memory. There were 3 off campus housing, all 3 within 3-5 subway stations away. In fact my friends that stayed in the housing ended up reaching my class venue earlier than I did, so I guess the location isn't that bad. I know one of them is at Konkuk Uni Station which is around 2-3 stops away, but that is also like a school dorm with a double deck bed in each room. Not too sure about the other facilities in the room already though. Hope that is more helpful.

      Cheers,
      Rachel

  4. Hi Rachel :D Thanks for writing this informative post and i truly enjoyed reading it :D Do come up with more HISS-related posts as I am interested in going to Hanyang for summer exchange for the coming summer holiday too :D Just wanna know a little more about the accomodation, for the off campus housing, do you know if most of the students living there are from Hanyang university? or there is a mix of different universities' students? Will the roommates be from the same or different university? Thanks in advance for and reading replying me :D

    1. Hey Beatrice,
Thank you for reading my blogpost! I have another post written about the academic related stuff. For off campus housing, I believe most are HISS students. I can't be sure though as I didn't ask my friends about the residents there either. However, some of my friends got Konkuk Uni dorm as their off campus housing, so I believe the Konkuk Uni students do stay in that dorm too?

Usually they will try to pair you with the same university (eg. NUS with NUS, NTU with NTU) But if you come from a private uni then it will be harder cos it depends on how many applicants from the same institution applied. Have to let you know that my Singaporean friend got a girl from the States as her roommate, but I think that's because the MERS incident caused the admin a lot of reshuffling, and they just decided to randomly pair applicants tgt. I got a fellow NUS student as my roommate. But don't worry, you'll get along with your roommate well(:

I hope I cleared your doubts!

Thanks for the reply Rachel :D And yes i read the lastest blogspot about HISS :D I would like to know more about how the weather in Korea will be like and how a week is like during the summer programme :) Do you have time to shop around during the weekend or stay in dorm to study? Sorry for taking your time to read and thanks for replying :)

  5. Hi Rachel! I chose the off campus dorm as well! Did they allow you to check in earlier and check out later? Because I was misled by the calendar they put online, they put jul1-4 for check in( school starts at Jul 4 ) and jul29-31 for check out ( school ends on 28/29) . So I already book my tickets for July 3 and July 31. However when I ask for the specific date I need to check in and out, they told me otherwise:/ they ask me to check in on 4th and check out at 28th:( wonder if it's the same for urs! Cos if not I will have to change my flight

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Dear reader, thank you for reading my blogpost! Yes, don't worry, the dates Jul 1-4 are available for all to check in. Because they can't have everyone check in all on the same date; they don't have enough logistics/ manpower to allow check in all on one day and not everyone can book a flight to arrive exactly on that day either.

In fact, I arrived in Seoul on the first day of check-in and stayed in my room alone until the last day of check-in then my roommate arrived.

However, I think it might be good to clarify on the Facebook group to double confirm about this, because idk if they changed their check-in policies. I am 80% sure that you don't need to cancel your flight, so don't worry!(:

And I checked out on the last day too! (similarly stayed alone for the checkout period cos my roommate flew off on the graduation day itself)

Hope I have cleared your doubts!(:

      Cheers,
      Rachel

    1. Hi,

Apologies for the late reply, I was busy with other commitments. Day 1 is just orientation where you will be warmly welcomed to the summer school and get your hanyang tee, and a school tour. That's all that I remembered for first day(: Have fun for summer school!

  8. Hi Rachel!

You mentioned that you went on this summer school alone, so did you travel to the dorm on your own? May I know what is your mode of transport from the airport to the dorm? Also is there any requirement for the CAP to apply for this program? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hey Nanda,

Yes I went alone! I traveled to the dorm alone too): It was a terrible experience, because the organisers changed the reporting place for check-in extremely last minute to a central reporting area before moving us out to the respective dorms (I received the email only on the night I flew)

So beforehand I only researched how to get to the dorm, but I didn't find out how to get the reporting area (I also did not get my SIM card until my 3rd day in Korea so I had no wifi to google map the area too) So do your research beforehand and familiarise the area and major landmarks to make your way there. Basically, there is a local bus if I rmb correctly its bus 4010 that goes around the borders of the school campus (the bus reports english name of the busstops too).

The school will actually arrange airport pickup for you if you opt for that option (but at additional charges of about 35,000won) which was quite expensive in my opinion (also, the bus departs at certain hours only. Meaning, if the bus departs at 11am and 3pm, but you land at say 1pm, you'll have to wait 2 hours for other students and the bus takes off at only 3pm) I ended up taking the airport limousine to the school (it stops at Wangsimni station)

Anyway, nope, no CAP requirement (not that I know of, but I guess a min. cap of 3.0 should be safe).

If you decide to go for HISS2017 or Winter School, feel free to chat me up for more info(:

      Love,
      Rachel

    2. Hey Rachel,

Thanks for your reply! Really appreciate it :) Omg them changing the reporting last min is really inconsiderate... I just got accepted in the winter programme but currently I could not find any friends to go with me, so my mum is rather worried and reluctant for me to go coz shes worried that it is unsafe :/ Actually I also got slightly deterred after relooking at the price I have to pay for 2 weeks (ard 3.5k after adding everything up including tuition fee, accomodation, air ticket and travel expenses). I can't go for HISS 2017 as I have commitments in school so if I want to clear my mod, I can only go for HIWS. Do you think the price is reasonable? Also, can I find out from you which airline did you take over? Thanks!!

    3. Hey Nanda,

Not to worry, going alone isn't as bad as it seems. It fact, the experience will be amazing. And you'll end up making a lot of new friends including Singaporean friends too (Hanyang University is very popular amongst Singaporeans).

You can try assuring your mum that it will not be unsafe if you're looking for the reporting place in the day. I can't guarantee it'll be safe at night but so far, the locals have been helpful (though very few are conversant in English)

Especially if you understand basic Korean/ have mobile data with you, it shouldnt be an issue cos you can google maps anywhere and even google translate whenever necessary.

For myself, i spent about 2.8k on school fees and accomodation. Flight was about 500-ish (I flew with Vietnam Airlines: you can find more info from my blogpost on the flight experience), and travel expense wise, I spent on average about 20,000won daily (the meals in the canteens are really quite cheap and affordable)

    4. I think winter school is slightly more expensive. But depending on how many mods you intend to clear, you can actually make your money worth(: I managed to clear 3 mods 👍🏼 So I think for 2 weeks of winter if you can clear up to 2 mods it's definitely super worth it 👍🏼😃

  9. Hi Rachel,

I'm planning to go for HISS2017 and i'm unsure if I should take 2 or 3 modules there! You took 3 modules there, right? Is it hectic to take 3 modules? Also, is it possible to share the room with your friend that is going for the programme as well?

    Cheers,
    Imran

    1. Hey Imran,

That's nice to know!(: Really really up to you. You might want to read the post on Academic Related Stuff to help you make the decision. For myself I took 3 modules so I felt it was a bit crazy cos I had lessons straight from 9am to 7pm (although the last class normally ended about 6-6.30pm) cos the profs are usually pretty understanding (that summer school is meant to be fun and not pure studying only)

If you want to make full use of your school fees then take 3 mods (cos Hanyang is the only summer school which charges a fixed fee no matter how many mods you take, others actually charges according to how many mods you clear). But if you intend to just go there and have fun (and perhaps have plans to go on a short trip to Jeju), then I would recommend to take 2 mods, as that means you can choose an afernoon flight on Thursday- which is generally cheaper than a Friday/ Saturday flight.

And regarding your last question, yes, you can request to share a room with your friend (there is an option there to fill in your friend's student's ID during the hostel request form which you'll need to fill up when closer to date).

      Hope that helps!(:

      Regards,
      Rachel

  10. Hi Rachel,

Thanks for sharing your experience. I am planning to go for HISS this coming June as well but I am a little unsure of how to go about doing it. May I know if you apply through NUS or directly to Hanyang University? Also, accommodation wise, will they provide you with a list to choose from? Thanks alot :)

    1. Hey Val,

Sorry for the late reply. That's nice! I applied directly through Hanyang though, cos summer exchange are self-sourced. I'm not sure if the procedure has changed.

For accomomdation, you can only indicate whether you want on-campus dorm, off-campus dorm, or off-campus housing which also is subject to availability. on-campus dorms are usually first to run out cos of high demand (they are the cheapest option). The admin staff will then randomly allocate you to one of the specific housing after getting either one of the three options.

If you apply late, then you'll have to self-source housing on your own.

      Hope that's helpful!

      Cheers,
      Rachel

  11. Hi Rachel,

Also, I read that you took Health Equity, Money and Banking and Introduction to Sociology. Does it mean we dont have to map modules from there to NUS's econs mod? Or is that considered as your minor / exposure?

    1. Hey Val,

Hanyang has very limited EC mods offered during their summer programme. The only mod you can map there is Money and Banking I. Yeap the others are minor/ UEs.

  12. Hi Rachel,

I have a few questions about Roseville dorm.
Does Roseville have an elevator or does the dorm only have stairs?
Also did you find out who is your roommate before move in day?
Is the dorm with keypad number locks or normal key locks?

    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Annie,
Nope, most of the dorms in Hanyang doesn't have elevators. Only stairs for Roseville (the highest is 5th floor, but lugging your luggage during checkin and checkout are the only problems you'll face without an elevator). I stayed on the 2nd floor so it was perfect for me.

Dorm is operated by keypad number locks (like those you see in Kdramas) and you'll get to choose your own passcode with your roommate.

They will upload/send a document with the housing allocation together with your student ID and room number. From there you cannot tell who is your room mate (unless you know a person's student ID), but usually people will ask on the closed group facebook page to find out who their roommates are before arriving in Hanyang (get their contact etc. to find out when they're checking in).

      Hope that's helpful!

  13. Hi Rachel,

Do you know what modules in Hanyang can be map to a GEM Group B module in NUS?
    Thanks!

    1. Hey Joanna,

I've no idea, but actually almost any mods that sound humanities/ social science related are possible to map back (as you can map back as a GEM dummy code).

Try to submit as many module mapping forms as possible with the modules you intend to take. Somem might be rejected, so to save time just submit as many as you want.

      Hope that's helpful.

  14. Hey Rachel,

Was wondering how easy the process of getting accepted into the program? I was confirmed by my university since it's their partnered universities and wondering if it's really simple to get accepted?

    Thanks.

    1. Hey,

When I applied 2 years back, the process was easy, and there were no requirements for acceptance into the program. I was almost instantaneously accepted after application (but that's because I submitted application early). I heard of a few people getting rejected as the programme has met their intake quota. I hope you got a place in HISS 2017! Have fun!

  15. This is really late but could I ask if the utility bills are included or are they paid separately? From what I've read, off-campus housing will require additional charge for utility bills whereas on-campus don't (which is frankly speaking, quite ridiculous). Did you have to pay utility bills as well or? I'm going to stay in roseville too, by the way! Really would appreciate a reply!! Thanks!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Yiting,

Utilities bill for me was inclusive in the dorm pricing. I didn't pay a single cent for off-campus, and I agree it's ridiculous cos off-campus housing is already more expensive.

But do note, I was staying in off-campus dorm, not off-campus housing. Though, my friends didn't mention anything about having to pay their utilities fee.

I can't guarantee anything, so you might want to email the administrators for HISS to clarify.

Oh, I just saw that you're gonna stay in Roseville. I didn't pay anything else other than the dorm fees, so you need not worry!(: Hope you get a room on the 2nd floor so it will be more convenient (as there's no lift up haha)

      Cheers,
      Rachel Lee

    2. Oh, thank you so much for the reply!
Yeah, regarding that... I chose a room at random so I got a room on the fifth floor - and I didn't do my research so I didn't know there wasn't any lifts and that #5XX meant a room on a fifth floor. Guess I'll be exercising a lot in Korea, then! 😂😂😂

    1. Dear crystalshiny,

Thank you for reading my blog! Since I went for the programme some time back, I only know the 3 modules I've taken is definitely available for mapping back to NUS. Other than that, there are modules like International Trade, International Finance that apparently can be mapped back to NUS Business School (as a level 3000 or 4000 module)- according to my friends.

Alternatively, any modules that interest you, and seems like a module NUS does not offer can still be mapped back as a dummy code GEM/GEK module. For example, my friend took a module on Aging population in (a country I can't remember which) and he mapped it back as a level 3000 dummy code GEM.

Sometimes you just need to keep trying to map back as many modules as you can, since not all module mapping will be approved by the module coordinator in NUS.

      Hope that is helpful(:

      Cheers,
      Rachel

    1. Hi Amanda,

Sorry for the late reply. I was inactive on my blog. The 3 fieldtrips included are NOT compulsory. In fact, you will have to sign up on a google form (and there a limited slots) about 1-2 days before the actual fieldtrip (to facilitate planning of transport and facilitators). I went for the fieldtrip since it was already inclusive, and the fieldtrips seems interesting (esp the Boryeong Mud Festival). The fieldtrips also gives you chances to interact with the other international students. But no worries, you can always not go for it. I had friends who traveled to Jeju/ the theme parks during the weekends (instead of join the planning activities).

Yes, you will still be accepted even if you are from a non-partnering university. But it would be better to email into their office to double check as I'm unsure if they have changed the application instructions.
